Description
The Aérospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon is a French three-engined heavy transport helicopter produced by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale). Designed for transport, anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship attack, and search and rescue missions, the type entered service with French Naval Aviation in October 1965. At its introduction, it was the most powerful helicopter built in Europe and set an absolute world speed record for helicopters in 1963.
Development
The SA 321 was developed from the unproduced SE.3200 Frelon to meet revised heavy helicopter requirements for the French and German navies. Development included international industrial participation: American manufacturer Sikorsky designed the six-bladed main rotor and five-bladed tail rotor, while Italian firm Fiat designed the main transmission. The first prototype conducted its maiden flight on 7 December 1962, followed by a navalized second prototype on 28 May 1963. On 23 July 1963, a modified prototype set an FAI world speed record of 350.4 km/h (217.7 mph). Aérospatiale terminated production in 1981 due to a lack of further orders.
Design
The Super Frelon features a light-alloy semi-monocoque hull with a planing bottom and watertight bilge compartments to permit water landings. Power is provided by three Turbomeca Turmo IIIC turboshaft engines mounted above the cabin, driving a 19-meter main rotor. Access to the cabin is provided by a hinged rear loading ramp, a forward starboard sliding door, and a floor hatch for sling-load operations. Specialized equipment on naval variants includes ORB-42 or ORB-31 search radar, a 50-meter rescue hoist, night vision equipment, laser designators, and inflight refueling capability.
Armament
In anti-submarine warfare configuration, the Super Frelon carries four homing torpedoes. Radar-equipped anti-ship variants carry two Exocet anti-ship missiles. Defensive equipment typically includes a single 20 mm cannon.
Operational History
French Naval Aviation operated the SA 321G for anti-submarine warfare, ballistic missile submarine escort patrols, and search and rescue until its retirement on 30 April 2010. Israel acquired SA 321K transports starting in 1966, deploying them during the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, and the 1982 Lebanon invasion before retiring the fleet in 1991. Iraq received 16 Exocet-equipped SA 321H helicopters starting in 1977 and deployed them against Persian Gulf shipping during the Tanker War and in the 1991 Gulf War, losing two to Iranian fighters. China purchased 12 helicopters between 1975 and 1977, subsequently producing the type under license as the Changhe Z-8. Additional export customers included South Africa and Libya.
