Jordan Army

The Royal Jordanian Land Force, directed by the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces, is headquartered in Amman. Force organization is structured into four regional commands: Northern Command headquartered near Irbid, Central Command, Eastern Command based around Mafraq and Zarqa, and Southern Command covering Aqaba, Maan, Tafilah, and Karak. Specialized independent formations include the Special Royal Guard Command, the Quick Reaction Force Brigade, and the King Abdullah II Special Forces Group. Internal security and public order support are supplemented by the Jordanian Gendarmerie Forces under Ministry of Interior oversight.

Armored units operate Al-Hussein main battle tanks, M60A3 tanks, and Khalid tanks, supported by Centauro wheeled tank destroyers. Mechanized and motorized infantry formations utilize BMP-2 and FNSS ACV-15 infantry fighting vehicles, M113, BTR-94, and Alvis Spartan armored personnel carriers, Ratel combat vehicles, and RG-33 mine-resistant ambush-protected platforms. Artillery components field M109 self-propelled howitzers, towed field pieces, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, and WM-80 multiple launch rocket systems. Air defense for ground formations relies on Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, short-range 9K33 Osa and 9K35 Strela-10 surface-to-air missile systems, and Igla man-portable air defense platforms. Tactical rotary-wing support, including UH-60 Black Hawk transport and AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters, is coordinated through specialized air force transport and attack squadrons attached to rapid reaction and special operations commands.

Primary army missions focus on border defense, counter-terrorism, internal security, and United Nations peacekeeping deployments. Combat history includes engagements during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1970 Black September conflict, and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Recent combat operations involve interdiction engagements against armed drug-smuggling syndicates along the Syrian border. Domestic defense manufacturing and vehicle development are conducted by the Jordan Design and Development Bureau, producing light armored vehicles, remote weapon stations, and tactical equipment. In 2026, military leadership initiated a three-year structural transformation plan to integrate unmanned aerial platforms, artificial intelligence, cyber warfare capabilities, and modernized reserve forces across ground formations.
