Description
The Soviet Union developed the S-200 surface-to-air missile system in the 1960s to defend administrative, industrial, and military installations from high-altitude bombers and air attacks. The project received the NATO reporting designation SA-5 following the cancellation of the earlier RS-25 Dal missile program. The first operational S-200 regiments entered Soviet service in 1966.
The S-200 is an all-weather, high-altitude system utilizing two-stage missiles. Initial thrust is provided by four solid-fueled strap-on rocket boosters that drop away in pairs after burnout, after which a liquid-fueled sustainer engine burning a Samin and nitric acid mixture powers the second stage. Target tracking and radar illumination are performed by the 5N62 continuous wave radar, assisted by early warning radars such as the P-14 and height-finding systems such as the PRV-17. The system can integrate with command posts from S-300 and S-400 air defense networks. Missile variants are armed with proximity-fuzed high-explosive fragmentation warheads or nuclear payloads with yields of 5 kilotons or 25 kilotons. Because system components are positioned at fixed sites via modified trucks rather than operating from self-propelled mobile platforms, sites rely on short-range air defense systems and anti-aircraft artillery for protection against anti-radiation missiles and low-altitude strikes. Operators have modified the platform over time; Iran introduced solid-state electronics, mobile launchers, and integration with Sayyad-series missiles, while Ukraine updated fire-control systems for long-range surface-to-surface strikes and air interception.
Originally deployed by the Soviet Air Defense Forces, the system was exported to Warsaw Pact allies, Middle Eastern nations, and Asian states, later transferring to Soviet successor states. Libyan forces launched S-200 missiles against U.S. military aircraft in the mid-1980s. Syria received S-200 batteries starting in 1983, using them during the Syrian Civil War and in engagements with Israeli forces. Syrian batteries downed an Israeli F-16I fighter jet in February 2018 and accidentally destroyed a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft in September 2018. Errant Syrian S-200 missiles also landed in Northern Cyprus in 2019 and near Dimona and Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2021.
In October 2001, a Ukrainian S-200 missile struck Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 over the Black Sea during an exercise. Ukraine retired its inventory in 2013, but reactivated modified units during the Russo-Ukrainian War to strike ground targets, including the Crimean Bridge, and claimed long-range shootdowns of Russian Beriev A-50 and Tu-22M3 aircraft in 2024. Poland transferred S-200 hardware to Ukraine in 2023. In March 2026, U.S. forces struck an Iranian S-200 launcher protecting the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
