Algeria Army

The Algerian Land Forces, officially known as Forces Terrestres Algériennes, form the ground component of the People's National Army. Command is centralized at the Land Forces Command headquarters in Algiers. Ground forces are organized across six geographical military regions: the 1st Military Region centered at Blida, the 2nd at Oran, the 3rd at Béchar, the 4th at Ouargla, the 5th at Constantine, and the 6th at Tamanrasset. Operational formations are structured around division and independent brigade level units. Armored divisions include the 1st Armored Division and the 8th Armored Division headquartered at Ras El Ma. Mechanized forces include the 12th Mechanized Division and the 40th Mechanized Infantry Division deployed in the 3rd Military Region near the western border. Additional independent units comprise the 41st Armored Brigade stationed at In Amenas, the 38th Motorized Brigade at Tindouf, and multiple airborne and commando regiments.

Armored units operate T-90SA and modernized T-72M1 main battle tanks, alongside older T-55AMV models. Mechanized infantry relies on BMP-2 and BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, supplemented by BMPT-72 Terminator 2 tank support combat vehicles. Heavy troop transport utilizes TPz Fuchs 2 and BTR-80 armored personnel carriers. Specialized fire-support platforms include modified T-62 hulls equipped with Berezhok combat turrets featuring autocannons and Kornet anti-tank guided missiles. Ground-based artillery assets combine Chinese PLZ-45 self-propelled howitzers and Russian 2S1 Gvozdika and 2S3 Akatsiya systems. Rocket artillery units field BM-30 Smerch, SR5 multi-caliber rocket launchers, and TOS-1A heavy flamethrower systems, complemented by Iskander-E tactical ballistic missile systems. Tactical air defense for army formations incorporates Buk-M2E, Tor-M2E, and Pantsir-S1 mobile missile-gun systems.

Primary operational requirements focus on border control and territorial integrity, with sustained force presence along frontiers with Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Tunisia. Land units conduct counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations targeting non-state armed groups in remote mountain ranges and southern desert corridors.

Modernization programs prioritize both foreign acquisitions and domestic assembly capabilities. Foreign procurement centers on Russian and Chinese suppliers for heavy armor, missile artillery, and electronic systems. Domestic defense manufacturing includes licensed local production of TPz Fuchs 2 armored personnel carriers in Ain Arnat and Nimr armored utility vehicles in Khenchela. Indigenous modernization efforts also encompass field modifications of legacy armor, such as upgrading infantry fighting vehicles with Berezhok turrets and integrating Chinese CS/SM5 self-loading mortars onto locally built Nimr wheeled platforms.
