Kaliningrad Chkalovsk Air Base (Chkalovskoye)

Kaliningrad Chkalovsk (also known as Chkalovskoye, Tchalov, or Prowehren) is a Russian Naval Aviation base located nine kilometers northwest of Kaliningrad in the Kaliningrad Oblast.

Construction of the military airfield began in 1935. The German Luftwaffe commenced operations at the facility, designated Fliegerhorst Prowehren, in 1936. Following World War II, the territory was annexed by the Soviet Union, and the Red Army assumed control of the installation.

During the Cold War, the base operated Tupolev Tu-16 and Tupolev Tu-22 bombers. The 15th Independent Long-Range Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment operated Tu-22 aircraft from 1966 to 1982, later transitioning to Sukhoi Su-24s by the 1990s. The facility also hosted the 846th Independent Naval Aviation Regiment, which operated Sukhoi Su-17 aircraft in 1992. In the same year, resident Tu-22 aircraft relocated to Zyabrovka as the unit re-equipped with the Sukhoi Su-24MR. In August 2002, the 689th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment and the 288th Independent Helicopter Regiment relocated to Chkalovsk from Nivenskoye.

Currently, the installation hosts the 689th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, subordinate to the 132nd Composite Aviation Division of the Baltic Fleet. This unit operates Sukhoi Su-27P and Su-27UP fighter aircraft. Additional inventory at the facility includes transport aircraft, helicopters, and stored Tupolev Tu-22M bombers. In August 2022, MiG-31 fighters modified to carry Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles deployed to the base.

The airfield infrastructure features four separate complexes designated for bomber and fighter parking. Between 2013 and 2014, the taxiways and aprons underwent renovation, and the apron capacity was expanded.
