Spain Selects Airbus A321 as Platform for Three SIGINT Aircraft in €436M Program
Spain has chosen the Airbus A321 as the platform for three signals-intelligence aircraft for the Spanish Air and Space Force, restoring a dedicated airborne SIGINT capability the country has lacked since its Boeing 707 was retired in 2014.
Spain has selected the Airbus A321 as the platform for three new signals-intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft for the Spanish Air and Space Force, according to the latest issue of Revista de Aeronáutica y Astronáutica, the Ministry of Defense's official publication. The choice was reported by Infodefensa on October 3 and by The War Zone on October 5, 2026.
The program is estimated at about €436 million, The War Zone reports. It is currently in its definition phase, covered by an 18-month definition contract worth €16 million, according to the same report. Under that arrangement Airbus is responsible for the aircraft platform and its conversion to the SIGINT role, while Indra is responsible for the mission-system architecture, The War Zone reports.
The exact A321 variant has not been confirmed. Aviation Week reports the aircraft will be an A321neo. The number of airframes, three, is the only fleet figure given so far.
The three aircraft restore a dedicated airborne SIGINT capability that Spain has been without since 2014, The War Zone notes. That year the Spanish Air Force retired its Boeing 707 SIGINT aircraft, designated TM.17-4 and nicknamed "Reina del Espectro," according to the same report. The 707 had been supported in the role by four Dassault Falcon 20s designated TM.11, The War Zone adds. Spain has had no crewed SIGINT aircraft in service since then.
In the meantime, the Spanish Air and Space Force is introducing the L3Harris SOAR (Scalable Open Architecture Reconnaissance) SIGINT system on its MQ-9A Predator B drones, according to The War Zone. GlobalMilitary.net's Spanish air force inventory lists four MQ-9A Reapers.
Dedicated crewed SIGINT fleets remain rare, and GlobalMilitary.net's inventory data shows how small they are even where they exist. The US Air Force lists 28 RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, a figure covering the Rivet Joint and related variants. The Royal Air Force operates 3 RC-135W Rivet Joints. Japan's maritime force flies 5 EP-3s. Against those fleets, a force of three aircraft would be in line with the size of other national SIGINT fleets.
The next milestone is the completion of the 18-month definition contract, which covers the platform conversion and the mission-system architecture. No delivery date has been given, according to The War Zone.
