Overview

The Azerbaijani Land Forces, operating under the Ministry of Defence, are organized into five army corps: the 1st Army Corps based at Barda, the 2nd Army Corps at Beylagan, the 3rd Army Corps at Shamkir, the 4th Army Corps at Baku, and the 5th Army Corps constituted as the Nakhchivan Combined Arms Army. Maneuver elements consist of motorized rifle, mechanized, armored, artillery, and commando brigades. Commando units are headquartered at garrisons including Hadrut and Kalbajar, with training and organization structured after the Turkish Land Forces model.

Armored units operate T-90S, T-72 SIM1, and T-72A/B main battle tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry elements utilize BMP-1, BMP-2, and BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles, alongside BTR-80, BTR-82A, and MT-LB armored personnel carriers. Tactical mobility is supplemented by light armored vehicles including Cobra, SandCat, Marauder, and Matador mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles.

Artillery formations field tube and rocket systems. Self-propelled tube artillery includes 2S1 Gvozdika, 2S3 Akatsiya, 2S19 Msta-S, ATMOS 2000, DITA 155mm, and Nora B-52 155mm self-propelled howitzers. Towed artillery relies on D-30 and D-20 field guns. Multiple launch rocket systems include BM-30 Smerch, TRG-300 Kasirga, T-122 Sakarya, TOS-1A heavy flamethrowers, and Polonez systems, supported by LORA tactical ballistic missile systems. Air defense forces organic to ground operations field S-300PMU2, Buk-M2E, Tor-M2E, Spyder, Barak 8, and HQ-9BE surface-to-air missile systems, alongside modernized ZSU-23-4 Shilka and Osa-AKM mobile units. Army aviation operates Mi-24G Super Hind assault helicopters and Mi-171V utility helicopters, supported by Harop, Orbiter, and Bayraktar unmanned aerial vehicles.

Combat experience includes frontline engagements in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and the military operation in Karabakh, establishing full territorial control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and surrounding districts. Primary operational tasks focus on border security, defense of mountainous terrain, and network-centric combat integration.

Modernization programs center on upgrading Soviet-era armor, replacing legacy artillery, and integrating NATO-compatible command-and-control procedures. Sumgait Technologies Park handles domestic overhaul projects, including digital fire-control and optronics upgrades for Shilka anti-aircraft guns and armor enhancements for T-72 tanks. Foreign acquisitions from Turkey, Israel, Serbia, the Czech Republic, and China supply precision-guided munitions, automated self-propelled howitzers, advanced air defense platforms, and electronic warfare systems. Modernization displays in 2025 showcased newly fielded Nora B-52 self-propelled howitzers and HQ-9BE long-range air defense systems.
