Germany Army

The German Army, known as the Heer, is the land component of the Bundeswehr. Operational command is exercised by the Army Command located in Strausberg, while training facilities are overseen by the Army Training Command in Leipzig. The active force structure centers on three divisions: the 1st Armored Division headquartered in Oldenburg, the 10th Armored Division headquartered in Veitshöchheim, and the Rapid Forces Division headquartered in Stadtallendorf. Combat formations include Panzerbrigade 45, assigned as a permanently forward-deployed element in Lithuania. Through multinational integration, the Netherlands Army 11th Air Assault Brigade, 13th Light Brigade, and 43rd Mechanized Brigade are integrated into German divisions.

Armored units operate Leopard 2 main battle tanks, including 2A6, 2A7V, and 2A8 variants. Mechanized infantry formations field Puma and Marder infantry fighting vehicles together with Boxer armored transport vehicles. Motorized and light infantry forces utilize Fuchs armored personnel carriers, Boxer variants, and Caracal air-assault vehicles. Artillery formations field Panzerhaubitze 2000 tracked self-propelled howitzers and MARS II multiple launch rocket systems. Army air defense units utilize mobile short-range air defense systems. Army aviation squadrons operate Eurocopter Tiger attack helicopters and NH90 transport helicopters alongside EC135 training helicopters.

Operational deployments focus on NATO collective defense and international crisis response. The primary forward presence involves Panzerbrigade 45 in Lithuania as part of NATO eastern flank deterrence. Additional personnel participate in NATO enhanced Vigilance Activities in Slovakia and peace-support operations under the NATO Kosovo Force mission.

Modernization programs focus on heavy armored capabilities and the development of the Medium Forces force category. Tank forces are integrating new-production Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks. Mechanized units are receiving Puma S1 infantry fighting vehicles equipped with digital command networks and MELLS anti-tank missile systems. Wheeled artillery capabilities are expanding through the acquisition of the RCH 155 self-propelled howitzer, which mounts an automated 155 mm artillery gun module on a Boxer chassis. Air defense capacity is being augmented with Skyranger 30 turret systems mounted on Boxer platforms. Motorized infantry units are procuring Heavy Weapon Carrier variants of the Boxer to increase firepower across medium formations.
