Description

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a single-engine ground-attack aircraft developed jointly by the United States and the United Kingdom. Designed for light attack and multi-role missions including close air support and armed reconnaissance, the aircraft entered service with the United States Marine Corps in January 1985. It is known for its vertical or short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) capabilities.

Development began in the early 1970s as a joint U.S.–UK effort to address payload and range limitations in the first-generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier.
