Tank mobility was once treated as secondary to armor and firepower โ but experience from the Sinai to the Fulda Gap rehabilitated speed as a decisive advantage. A fast tank can exploit a breakthrough before defenders regroup, seize an objective before it is reinforced, and reposition between engagements to avoid counter-fire. In the modern era, drone-saturated battlefields have made the ability to move quickly between engagements even more valuable: a stationary tank is a dead tank.
The fastest tanks tend to fall into two categories: Soviet-designed vehicles built for exploitation operations in large-scale European warfare, where speed across the North German Plain mattered more than protection against anti-tank weapons that might never arrive; and modern turbine-powered designs engineered for rapid deployment and maneuver.
