About this Ranking
Maximum speed has defined fighter aviation since the dawn of the jet age. The sound barrier fell in 1947; Mach 2 was routine by the late 1950s; Mach 3 was achieved operationally in the 1960s with the MiG-25 — built explicitly to outrun anything NATO could put in the air. But in modern air combat, raw top speed has become less decisive than stealth, sensor fusion, and long-range missile capability, a shift in doctrine that has fundamentally changed what we demand from fighter aircraft.
Nevertheless, speed remains relevant. A fast aircraft can disengage from an unfavorable engagement before the enemy can achieve a firing solution, intercept incoming threats before they reach their targets, and cover vast patrol areas quickly. High speed at altitude also reduces vulnerability to infrared-guided missiles during a sprint through defended airspace.
The fastest fighters in this ranking are overwhelmingly Cold War-era designs built for specific interception roles: the MiG-25 Foxbat and its successor the MiG-31 Foxhound were designed to shoot down US strategic bombers at speeds and altitudes where Western interceptors could not follow. The F-15 Eagle, with a top speed of Mach 2.5, remains the fastest active US fighter after five decades in service. Modern fifth-generation fighters like the F-22 and F-35 sacrifice peak speed for stealth and sensor integration — they are optimized for the fight they expect to have, not the sprint record. Speeds reflect manufacturer or government-sourced figures at altitude under optimal conditions.
