Longest Military Runways
The longest military runway in the world is at Shigatse Air Base (tied with Base aérienne 125 Istres-Le Tubé), which measures 5,000 m. Ranking of the longest runways at active military air bases worldwide, measured on the longest paved strip at each installation. Runway length governs which aircraft a base can operate: strategic bombers, heavy transports and fully fuelled tankers need far more concrete than a fighter wing does.

About this Ranking
Runway length is the hardest constraint in air basing. It cannot be surged in a crisis, it takes years and a large budget to extend, and it decides what an air force can fly from a given piece of ground. A fighter squadron operates comfortably from 2,400 m. A fully fuelled tanker, a strategic bomber or a heavy airlifter needs 3,000 to 3,500 m, and the margin disappears fast as conditions worsen.
Three factors stretch that requirement. Altitude is the most brutal: thin air cuts both engine thrust and wing lift, which is why Shigatse and Ngari Gunsa, the two Chinese bases on the Tibetan plateau above 3,700 m, are paved to 5,000 and 4,500 m for aircraft that would need barely 3,000 m at sea level. High ambient temperature does the same to air density. And a flight-test or space mission adds its own demand — Edwards Air Force Base and Vandenberg Space Force Base hold their places on this list because they were built to recover aircraft and spacecraft that arrive fast, heavy and without a second attempt.
The table therefore mixes three kinds of installation. Purpose-built strategic and test bases such as Istres-Le Tubé, home of the French tanker and flight-test fleet, sit at the top alongside plateau bases whose length is a physics tax. Joint civil–military airfields make up much of the rest: several of the Iranian and Indian entries are international airports that host military units, and they are listed because that is what the base actually is. Figures are the longest single runway at each site, so a base with several shorter strips can rank below one with a single long one.
Only active installations are ranked, and only those whose runway dimensions are on file.
